Pencil Me In

Let me tell you a story, I love pencil skirts. I love how they look and the silhouette they give you. The problem has been that I don’t like how pencil skirts look one me. Its going back to the VBO issue I have. Its holding me back.

Then I saw Katha wearing this skirt, and I was smitten. I really really wanted this skirt. So I bought it. The 26 was far too big, so I sold it to Nicole and I picked up the last size available – a 22 – it fits fine but I don’t like how it clings to my belly. So its sat, unworn in my drawer.

Then, last week at Michelle’s clothes swap I got a woollen pencil skirt. I tried it on and the others encouraged me to keep it. Now, I didn’t expect it to get cold enough to wear a woollen skirt this side of September, but last week was pretty chilly and I’m working in a different office which is FREEZING. So the other morning, I dug out the skirt and attempted to give it a go. This is what I came up with:

Skirt – vintage

Shirt – ASOS curve

Belt – New Look

Shoes – Dorothy Perkins

Now there are things wrong with the outfit – I need some wedges to make my legs look less stumpy etc but overall I liked it and more importantly I felt confident in the outfit. I’m not quite at the stage yet not to wear a loose top over my pencil skirt, but the fact I have one on is a major step forward. Such a big step forward, I wore the lace skirt later on in the week (pictures to come!). I also think putting the belt on helps bring tidy it up.

The husband was being arty and took this last picture. When he was taking it I was all eye rolly and huffy, but looking at the end result, its pretty neat.

So my message of today is FUCK FLATTERING and enjoy!

  1. Claire this skirt looks fab on you. I’m also wary of the same thing with pencil skirts – love them on others but just not sure they’re for me. Mmm, maybe I should have a rethink.

  2. This outfit looks great! And you look fabulous, of course. The cobalt blue looks really good with the neutral colors in the top. Love how you added the belt!

I understand your reservations about pencil skirts – I used to feel the same. I’ve noticed that it really depends on the construction of the skirt. Sometimes there are little tricks – curved seams, seam placement, that make things “fit” better”. Other “pencil” skirts are a literal tube of fabric and it doesn’t always work.

Can’t wait to get the lace print skirt and do an OOTD. Maybe we can do something together! Haha. The post office needs to get their shit together!

  3. What a gorgeous colour on that skirt, and I LOVE the pony print!
I’m on the lookout right now for a good pencil skirt, but not having much luck.
